In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as he saw fit. (judges17:6, 21:25)
And the LORD told him: “Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king. (1sam8:7)
What the people said to Samuel was to ask the king. The request for a king gave up God who want be their king. Then, in the Book of Judges, the expression “because there was no king” means that even though God was their king, they disregarded it as a transparent being and did what was right in his own observations. That means every man was a king. What does it mean to God to be treated as a transparent King and what does He say?
We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. (Isa53:6)
He says that is sin and His son will responsible for this sin. It is a sin not to serve the king as a king.
Finally, Jesus came here as a king. Then he said, “Follow me!” but they said they would do it later. He commanded “Sold all your property, and gave it to the poor, and follow me.” But he has gone away.
I had been concerned that this king would ask something I could not do or that would be bad to me. My life and all that I have is given to me through Him, and when I know that He is my Lord, I am starting to live as a people of King, and I am serving Him as the true King. Why does God like being king rather than being God.
It is true that obedience(to king) is better than sacrifice(to god). If we look at Jesus, we can get more. Jesus did not call himself the Son of God, but called himself the Son of Man. It seems that he wants to emphasize that he is a descendant of David king and wants to be intimate with us. The son of David is to emphasize that he was born king in the genealogy of the king. I can see that He want to become a king thoroughly. “I am the king. I was born to this, and came to this world for this.” (John 18:37) All the parables in the gospel are about the king and the son.
Another reason is related to the kingdom of God. There is no need a God in the kingdom. Why does He adhere to His kingdom? God wants to be friendly with people from the beginning. God is difficult to communicate with His people closely for God is a different dimension. The king, however, spreads his will throughout the kingdom and frequently comes out of the garden to hear the troubles of the citizens of the nation, to judge, and to meet people. This garden was called the court, and in the Bible this garden was on the east side of Eden. There we can see what he was walking and talking with Adam. I was eager on serving God as a God of religion in the past, but in recent years I have been more interested in being friendly as a king.
